The Stringcredibles: The Butterfly Lands

Photographing ‘The Butterfly Lands’ Project – A Story About Migration
Earlier this year, I photographed a performance of The Butterfly Lands at a primary school in Birmingham—a captivating new project by The Stringcredibles. This dynamic show, designed for Key Stage 2 pupils, uses the metaphor of a butterfly’s migration to explore themes of diversity, empathy, and belonging. It combines original music, poetry, movement, and data visualisations to create an immersive experience that resonates deeply with young audiences.
The Stringcredibles, a quartet of world-class musicians from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, collaborate with Nate Holder, an award-winning saxophonist and advocate for inclusive music education. Together, they bring to life a performance that is both educational and emotionally engaging. The show encourages students to reflect on all that diversity brings to our communities, fostering a sense of connection and understanding.
The Butterfly Lands is more than just a performance; it’s a tool for social change, using the arts to promote understanding and kindness. Being part of this project as a photographer allowed me to witness firsthand the impact of music and storytelling in shaping the perspectives of the next generation. It’s an experience I’ll cherish and continue to reflect upon in my work.
